Your baby just can&#8217;t seem to fall asleep, you&#8217;ve tried everything, and yet you&#8217;re at the end of your rope. You may have even been told well-meaning advice like: &#8220;Let it cry&#8221; or &#8220;You&#8217;re spoiling it too much.&#8221; As a baby sleep coach and mother, I know: These tips often don&#8217;t help \u2013 quite the opposite. They create uncertainty. In this post, I want to clear up 5 common misconceptions about baby sleep and show you what really helps \u2013 lovingly, gently, and attachment-oriented.<\/p>\n<h3>Misconception 1: &#8220;Sleep has to be trained&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p> No. Sleep is not a skill we can &#8220;teach.&#8221; Babies sleep well when they feel safe, held, and understood. Gentle companionship builds trust \u2013 and that&#8217;s what leads to better sleep.<\/p>\n<h3>Misconception 2: &#8220;The baby has to learn to fall asleep alone&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p> Falling asleep alone is a developmental stage \u2013 not a requirement. No baby &#8220;learns&#8221; to sleep better through separation. They learn that closeness is safe. Sleeping with companionship is perfectly fine and not a step backward.<\/p>\n<h3>Misconception 3: &#8220;If the baby doesn&#8217;t sleep through the night, something is wrong&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p> Did you know that waking up at night is <b>biologically normal<\/b>? The body protects itself from deep sleep. It&#8217;s more important how the baby gets back to sleep \u2013 not how often it wakes up.<\/p>\n<h3>Misconception 4: &#8220;It&#8217;s because of nursing\/not nursing\/cuddling\/etc.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p> Many parents look for <i>the one reason<\/i>. But sleep is <b>complex<\/b>: Maturity, attachment, daily rhythm, sensory processing \u2013 all play a role. There isn&#8217;t <i>one solution<\/i>, but there&#8217;s your path.<\/p>\n<h3>Misconception 5: &#8220;If I ask for help, I&#8217;ve failed&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p> Quite the opposite. Parents who seek support are acting courageously, lovingly, and responsibly. Because you want to do it right \u2013 for you, your baby, and your family&#8217;s peace.<\/p>\n<h3>You don&#8217;t have to do this alone<\/h3>\n<p> If you feel like you can&#8217;t go on, then bring loving companionship to your side.
