Every family knows them - those nights that just won't end. Your baby just won't sleep, you've tried everything and yet you're at the end of your tether. Maybe you've been told with good intentions: "Let him cry it out" or "You're spoiling him too much".
As a baby sleep coach and mother, I know that these tips often don't help - on the contrary. They are unsettling. In this article, I would like to clear up 5 common misconceptions about baby sleep and show you what really helps - lovingly, gently and with a focus on bonding.
Misconception 1: "Sleep has to be trained"
No. Sleep is not a skill that we can "teach". Babies sleep well when they feel safe, held and understood. Gentle guidance creates trust - and this is exactly what leads to better sleep.
Misconception 2: "The baby must learn to fall asleep alone"
Sleeping alone is a developmental step - not a must. No baby "learns" to sleep better by being separated. It learns that closeness is safe. Sleeping with company is perfectly fine and not a step backwards.
Misconception 3: "If the baby doesn't sleep through the night, something is wrong"
Did you know that waking up at night is biologically normal? The body protects itself from sleeping too deeply. It is more important how the baby finds its way back to sleep - not how often it wakes up.
Misconception 4: "It's due to breastfeeding/not breastfeeding/cuddling/etc."
Many parents look for a single reason. But sleep is complex: maturity, bonding, daily rhythm, stimulus processing - everything plays a part. There is no one solution, but there is a way.
Misconception 5: "If I get help, I have failed"
Quite the opposite. Parents who seek support act courageously, lovingly and responsibly. Because you want to do it right - for you, your baby and your family peace.
You don't have to do it alone
If you have the feeling that you can't go on, then get loving support at your side.
